About this Blog

This Blog is a collection of excerpts from talks given by Sri Swami Vishwananda. Please note that this Blog does not focus on dates, background and the exact original way of how Swamiji delivered the speech. We edit the talks slightly, presenting them in a kind of “poetic” format. This means we choose certain paragraphs from a talk which reflect a particular theme.
Read them as pieces of Divine Wisdom, meditate upon the words and just feel how Swamiji is addressing you with His words.

How Maha Vishnu was cursed into a stone

As some of you know, we celebrated "Kartik Poornima" on the 2nd November 2009 with Sri Swami Vishwananda. "Kaartik Poornima" is a holy day in the Hindu tradition, which is also the birthday of Matysa, Vishnu's incarnation as a fish. Here is an excerpt:

Sri Swami Vishwananda: Jai Gurudev!

Today we are celebrating Kartik Poornima. Kartik already started. I think we are in the middle of it and it will be finished in two weeks time. Kartik month is considered to be the most auspicious month, where Maha Vishnu is praised, a special fasting is done and today is most auspicious, because according to certain traditions it’s the birth of Tulsi Devi.
Tulsi Devi was one of the main Devotees of Maha Vishnu, not only that- She was the sister-in-law of Maha-Lakshmi and at the same time She was also the wife of Maha Vishnu. So the question will be how many husbands She had? The first husband to whom She was married was a demon. What was his name? (laughter) Eh? (Someone: Jalandhar) Jalandhar. So She was married to Jalandhar, who was a great demon, well, a demon. (laughing) So, but first before becoming a demon, he was very nice. That’s why Tulsi married him. But after that, when pride arises, ego arises, of course he became a demon. So you know that, eh? (laughter) But his power was not in him. His power was the faith that Tulsi had in Maha Vishnu. So when pride had arose inside of him, he became blind to the reality. So he was conquering everywhere. Wherever he would go, he would be victorious, because of the faith of Tulsi. So such was his pride, that he to Shiva and said to Shiva: „I will marry Parvati, your wife.“- Crazy. So Shiva, Ganesha, Kartikeya all of them went for war against him, but they where defeated. Shiva was defeated, why? Because Jalandhar wore a garland, that Tulsi had give to him and this garland protected him, even against Shiva. So as he went to Parvati and said “I have defeated your husband now. I will take you as my wife”, Parvati looked at him and said “You better go away. I can just burn you like nothing right now.” This is the power of Ma. “I am your Mother, how can you say that? I forgive you, but go away from here.” So he realized his mistake and ran away. And Tulsi, when She heard that and said “What have you done?” You know Parvati is the Mother of the Universe, She is Parashakti.” Then Lakshmi came and talked with him and said “What have you done? You know She is your Mother, how can you even have the thought of that?” So he became very angry. So as Tulsi used to pray to Maha Vishnu, of course He was not happy. So He made Tulsi blind. He removed the eyes of Tulsi. But even that Maha Vishnu replaced back the eyes and like that many, even Maha, all the Devas tried to fight with Him. It was not possible. So finally they went to Maha Vishnu and said “Maha Vishnu, She is your great Devotee. You are the only one who can stop that effect of that garland. So save us.” So Maha Vishnu said “Okay, I will try my best”, because you know Bhakti is more important, you know? So Maha Vishnu said to Jalandhar, the demon “I will fight you and defeat you. So let’s go for a fight.” So they went and when they went, Maha Vishnu disguised Himself, changed His form into Her husband form and came home, but this garland was the garland of purity, that She had for Her husband, the love that She had for Her husband, that She would never even touch another man, that pure She was. So when Maha Vishnu changed His form and came, of course He was another man. And when She saw Him, She touched Him and said “You have come back home.” And the moment She touched him, the garland… (Someone suggests ‘broke’) not broke, became old, I don’t know how you call it in English. (Someone suggests ‘rotten’). Rotten? Well, not really rotten, it became black. At that moment Shiva with His trident chopped the head of Jalandhar, the head flew and fall at the feet of Tulsi. And Tulsi looked at it and He said to Her “You have cheated to me. You have been with another man.” Then Tulsi said “Who are you? This is my husband, next to me.” And He said “No, this is not your husband. I am your husband.” Then he died. Then Tulsi said “Tell me who you are.” Then Maha Vishnu revealed His true form to Tulsi and of course Tulsi became very angry. So out of Her power of devotion, She cursed Maha Vishnu and said to Maha Vishnu “As you have been like that, I curse you to become a stone.” At that moment, He became a stone for real.
